| Marica Stanković was born on 31.December 1900, in the Upper town of Zagreb and was baptized the next day in the parish church of St.Marko. In a religious atmosphere of a working class family and at the convent school of the Sisters of Mercy she had a happy childhood and early youth. She received a solid general and religious education where she gained her first enthusiasm for Christ. With her clear mind and joyful temperament, very early on she showed great communication skills and a talent for writing. In 1920 she graduated from a regular school in an institution offering her initial teacher-training. Participating in the "Eagle rally" in Maribor, she come into close contact with Catholic renewal movements. She met Blessed Ivan Merz there with whom she would soon be linked in close friendship and collaboration in their apostolic work with young people. Her professional career began when she started her work as a teacher in Hrvatsko Zagorje and after completing further studies at the Teacher Training College. She taught at school in Podravska Slatina, Čakovec, Gračac, Kutina and at the comprehensive school for both girls and boys in Draškovićeva Street in Zagreb. With her broad education and, professionally well prepared, she was always in good spirits and showed interest in everything. She was an excellent teacher beloved by her colleagues and students. She faithfully performed all her duties as a teacher and at the same time in her enthusiasm "For Christ, for the Church, for souls", she devoted herself to active work in Catholic organizations for young young people- first the "Eagles" then the "Crusaders" where she took on the most responsible duties. She was the President of the Great Crusade Sisterhood from its foundation in 1930 till its disbandment in 1945. For years she edited the For Faith and Home, where most of her numerous articles discussed the most important questions and topics of her time. She tirelessly travelled all over the country organizing and giving lectures and speeches, discussing and debating, inspiring and animating everybody with her enthusiasm. Her optimsm and serenity, her radicalism, her broad vision and understanding of youth problems, her personal involvement and generosity and finally her closeness and warmth of her humour were so attractive to young people. She was the first woman in Croatia to receive the highest Church honour. She received the award in 1942. Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for her work engaged among the youth in the spirit of the Catholic Action. She was totally devoted to God from her youth and her Bible and inspired by the mystery of the Church and the Eucharist. |
